neuter of a derivative of πέλας (near); (adverbially) close by; as noun, a neighbor, i.e. fellow (as man, countryman, Christian or friend)

From Manners and Customs of the Bible:
Luke 10:29. He, willing to Justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor?
The Jews gave a very narrow definition of the word “neighbor.” The robbing interpreted it to mean only those who were of the Jewish people. The Gentiles were not considered neighbors.
