What a touching scene! A stately ship on a quiet sea nearing port. On the deck the mother is seated with her two children. There is but one thought in her mind: Will they reach the harbor in safety, or will they fall victims to a submarine? See the look of almost despair written in her mother-eyes; see the mother-hands embracing her boys! One hand over the shoulder of the older boy, who is bravely looking out over the sea; the other round the waist of the younger one, who is leaning with closed eyes against her protecting side., Her hands are grasping the lifebelts on her boys. We can fancy the prayer coming from her heart as her strained eyes gaze out over the sea, “O God, bring us safely home, my boys and me; let not death come to us on these quiet waters. O God, protect us for our Saviour’s sake. Amen.”
Yes, thousands are praying these prayers upon our seas today. And we must pray that this deadly peril may be taken from us. I was at a large seaport a short time since, and I saw a crowd of ships gathered together in the harbor. I asked a friend who was with me what it meant, and he told me there were submarines outside, and these ships were sheltering in the harbor’ on that account. There is danger everywhere today — in the air above, on the earth, under the sea. Danger to men and women and to little children. Many fear the wrath of man and seek to shelter from it. But what of the wrath of God? There is only one refuge from that, and that refuge is Christ. At home, on the battlefields, on the seas, Christ will shelter all who call upon His Name. Nine shall perish who accept Him as their Saviour, and He saves in a moment all who ask for His salvation. And there is no way to heaven but by Him. “I am the Way,” He says.
