Num. 3:1‑4:49• 1{i}And these are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that Jehovah spoke with Moses on mount Sinai.{/i}
2{i}And these are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.{/i}
3{i}These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, who were consecrated to exercise the priesthood.{/i}
4{i}And Nadab and Abihu died before Jehovah when they offered strange fire before Jehovah in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no sons; and Eleazar and Ithamar exercised the priesthood in the presence of Aaron their father.{/i}
5{i}And{/i} Jehovah spake with Moses, saying,
6Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him.
7{i}and they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole assembly, before the tent of meeting, to do the service of the tabernacle.{/i}
8{i}And they shall keep all the utensils of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle.{/i}
9And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons: they are wholly given to him out of the children of Israel.
10And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall wait on their priest's office: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.
11And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying,
12And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine;
13because all the firstborn are mine; for on the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast: mine shall they be: I am Jehovah.
14{i}And Jehovah spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying{/i},
15Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them.
16And Moses numbered them according to the word of Jehovah, as he was commanded.
17{i}And these are the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari.{/i}
18{i}And these are the names of the sons of Gershon according to their families: Libni and Shimei.{/i}
19{i}And the sons of Kohath according to their families: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.{/i}
20{i}And the sons of Merari according to their families: Mahli and Mushi.{/i} These are the families of the Levites according to the house of their fathers.
21Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimites: these are the families of the Gershonites.
22Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those that were numbered of them were seven thousand and five hundred.
23The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behind the tabernacle westward.
24And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael.
25And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation shall be the tabernacle (the outward frame) and the tent, the covering thereof, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation,
26and the hangings of the court, and the curtain for the door of the court, which is by the tabernacle, and by the altar round about, and the cords of it for all the service thereof.
27And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izeharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites.
28{i}According to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, there were eight thousand six hundred, who kept the charge of the sanctuary.{/i}
29{i}The families of the sons of Kohath encamped on the side of the tabernacle southward.{/i}
30{i}And the prince of the father's house of the families of the Kohathites was Elizaphan the son of Uzziel.{/i}
31{i}And their charge was{/i} the ark, and the table; and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the hanging, and all the service thereof.
32And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be chief over the chief of the Levites, and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary.
33{i}Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites, and the family of the Mushites: these are the families of Merari.{/i}
34{i}And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand two hundred.{/i}
35{i}And the prince of the father's house of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail. They encamped on the side of the tabernacle northward.{/i}
36{i}And the charge of the sons of Merari consisted in the oversight of{/i} the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, and all the vessels thereof, and all that serveth thereto,
37{i}and the pillars of the court round about, and their bases, and their pegs, and their cords.{/i}
38{i}And those who encamped before the tabernacle eastward, before the tent of meeting toward the sunrising, were Moses, and Aaron and his sons, who kept the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger that cometh near shall be put to death.{/i}
39{i}All that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of Jehovah, according to their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty-two thousand.{/i}
40{i}And Jehovah said to Moses, Number all the first-born males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names.{/i}
41{i}And thou shalt take the Levites for me (I am Jehovah) instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites, instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Israel.{/i}
42{i}And Moses numbered, as Jehovah had commanded him, all the firstborn among the children of Israel.{/i}
43{i}And all the firstborn males, by the number of the names, from a month old and upward, according to their numbering, were twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three.{/i}
44{i}And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,{/i}
45{i}Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine: I am Jehovah.{/i}
46{i}And for those that are to be ransomed, the two hundred and seventy-three of the firstborn of the children of Israel, which are in excess over the Levites,{/i}
47{i}thou shalt take five shekels apiece by the poll, according to the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them, —twenty gerahs the shekel;{/i}
48{i}and thou shalt give the money unto Aaron and unto his sons for those in excess among them who are to be ransomed.{/i}
49{i}And Moses took the ransom-money from them that were over and above those who were ransomed by the Levites;{/i}
50{i}of the firstborn of the children of Israel he took the money, a thousand three hundred and sixty-five shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary.{/i}
51{i}And Moses gave the money of them that were ransomed to Aaron and to his sons, according to the commandment of Jehovah, —as Jehovah had commanded Moses.{/i}
1{i}And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,{/i}
2{i}Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, after their families, according to their fathers' houses,{/i}
3{i}from thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, all that enter into the service, to do the work in the tent of meeting.{/i}
4{i}This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting: it is most holy.{/i}
5When the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering veil, and cover the ark of testimony with it:
6and shall put thereon the covering of badgers' (or tachash) skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof.
7{i}And upon the table of showbread they shall spread a cloth of blue; and put thereon the dishes, and the cups, and the bowls, and goblets of the drink-offering; and the continual bread shall be thereon.{/i}
8And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet , and cover the same with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put in the staves thereof.
9{i}And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and its lamps, and its snuffers, and its snuff-trays, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they perform its service;{/i}
10{i}and they shall put it and all the utensils thereof within a covering of badgers' skin, and shall put it upon a pole.{/i}
11{i}And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of badgers' skin, and shall put its staves to it.{/i}
12{i}And they shall take all the instruments of service, wherewith they serve in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers' skin, and shall put them upon a pole.{/i}
13{i}And{/i} they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon.
14{i}and they shall put upon it all the utensils thereof, wherewith they perform service about it: the firepans, the forks, and the shovels, and the bowls, —all the utensils of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers' skin, and put its staves to it.{/i}
15{i}And when Aaron and his sons have ended covering the sanctuary, and all the utensils of the sanctuary, when the camp setteth forward, then afterwards the sons of Kohath shall come to carry it; but they shall not touch the holy things, lest they die. This is what the sons of Kohath have to carry in the tent of meeting.{/i}
16{i}And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall have the oversight of the oil for the light, and the fragrant incense, and the continual oblation, and the anointing oil, —the oversight of the whole tabernacle, and of all that is therein, over the sanctuary, and over its furniture.{/i}
17{i}And Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,{/i}
18{i}Ye shall not cut off the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites,{/i}
19{i}but this shall ye do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they draw near unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden;{/i}
20{i}but they shall not go in and see for a moment the holy things, lest they die.{/i}
21{i}And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,{/i}
22{i}Take also the sum of the sons of Gershon, according to their fathers' houses, after their families.{/i}
23{i}From thirty years old and upward to fifty years old shalt thou number them; every one that cometh to labour in the work, to perform the service in the tent of meeting.{/i}
24{i}This shall be the service of the families of the Gershonites, in serving, and in carrying:{/i}
25{i}they shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tent of meeting, its covering, and the covering of badgers' skin that is above upon it, and the curtain of the entrance to the tent of meeting,{/i}
26{i}and the hangings of the court, and the curtain of the entrance, of the gate of the court, which surroundeth the tabernacle and the altar, and the cords thereof, and all the instruments of their service; and all that is to be done for these things shall they perform.{/i}
27{i}At the commandment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their carrying, and in all their service; and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their carrying.{/i}
28{i}This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting, and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.{/i}
29{i}The sons of Merari: after their families, according to their fathers' houses shalt thou number them;{/i}
30{i}from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth into the labour, to perform the service of the tent of meeting.{/i}
31{i}And this shall be the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tent of meeting: the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and bases thereof,{/i}
32{i}and the pillars of the court round about, and their bases, and their pegs, and their cords, all their instruments, according to all their service; and by name ye shall number to them the materials which are their charge to carry.{/i}
33{i}This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service in the tent of meeting, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.{/i}
34{i}And Moses and Aaron and the princes of the assembly numbered the sons of the Kohathites after their families, and according to their fathers' houses,{/i}
35{i}from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, every one that entered into the labour, for service in the tent of meeting.{/i}
36{i}And those that were numbered of them according to their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty.{/i}
37{i}These are they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, every one that served in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of Jehovah through Moses.{/i}
38{i}And those that were numbered of the sons of Gershon, after their families, and according to their fathers' houses,{/i}
39{i}from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, every one that entered into the labour, for service in the tent of meeting,{/i}
40{i}even those that were numbered of them, after their families, according to their fathers' houses, were two thousand six hundred and thirty.{/i}
41{i}These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, all that served in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of Jehovah.{/i}
42{i}And those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, after their families, according to their fathers' houses,{/i}
43{i}from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, every one that entered into the labour, for service in the tent of meeting,{/i}
44{i}even those that were numbered of them according to their families, were three thousand two hundred.{/i}
45{i}These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the commandment of Jehovah through Moses.{/i}
46{i}All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the princes of Israel numbered, after their families and according to their fathers' houses,{/i}
47{i}from thirty years old and upward even to fifty years old, every one that came to serve in the work of the service, and in the work of carrying, in the tent of meeting,{/i}
48{i}even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand five hundred and eighty.{/i}
49{i}According to the commandment of Jehovah they were numbered by Moses, every one for his service, and for his burden, and numbered by him, as Jehovah had commanded Moses{/i}. (Num. 3:1‑4:49)
