71. O Jesus! Everlasting God

8,8,6.
by C. Batty
1
O Jesus! everlasting God!

Who didst for sinners shed Thy blood

Upon th’ accursèd tree;

And, finishing redemption’s toil,

Didst win for us the happy spoil —

All praise we give to Thee.
“The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin.” (Jeremiah 1:1)
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.” (Galatians 3:13)
“I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.” (John 17:4)
2
Fain would we think upon Thy pain,

Would find in Thee our life and gain,

And firmly fix our heart

Upon Thy grief and dying love,

Nor evermore from Thee remove,

Though from all else we part.
3
The more through grace ourselves we know,

The more rejoiced we are to bow

And glory in Thy cross;

To trust in Thine atoning blood,

And look to Thee for every good,

And count all else but dross.
“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.” (Galatians 6:14)
“For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.” (Psalm 84:11)
“Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ.” (Philippians 3:8)
