Praying in the Trenches

A Corporal in the Fifth Kings Liverpool Regiment tells us this incident: we had to advance and support or first line across a field that was covered with dead and dying. The enemy’s observers followed us, and directed all their shrapnel on that field. We gained the original German trenches, and we had to throw their dead bodies over the trench to make room to move. Souvenirs were to be had in hundreds, but the men did not think of them. Many of them dropped on their knees and thanked God that they got through that shrapnel uninjured.
