This is judged to refer to ‘spelt,’ the Triticum spelta, a species of grain resembling wheat (Ex. 9:32; Isa. 28:25). The same Hebrew word in Ezekiel 4:9 is translated “fitches,” with “spelt” in the margin. The northern rye is the Secale cereale.
