Salonica, Thessalonica

Take the first four letters off Thessalonica, and you have its modern name. It lay one hundred, miles west of Philippi. It is well known to us all to-day as our war-base, in the Balkans. It became a great war-base in an earlier and greater campaign. Look at 1 Thess. 1:8,8For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God-ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing. (1 Thessalonians 1:8) and notice the words “from you.” Has the Gospel come “unto you” as it came to the Thessalonians? (Read that splendid verse 1 Thess. 1:55For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. (1 Thessalonians 1:5).) If so, God wants your life to be a base of operations for the spreading of the glad news, so that “from you” others may get the knowledge of Him.
