Sixty as 6x10, or as 5x12, will find allied but differing values.
Nebuchadnezzar's image was 60 cubits high (
Dan. 3:1
1
Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura, in the province of Babylon. (Daniel 3:1)
). Does it not aptly express administration in man's responsibility, 5x12? Yet also there was there a responsibility towards God which was imperfectly met, 10x6.
5x12 would seem to be its character in the 60 valiant men about Solomon's bed (
Sol. 3:7
7
Behold his bed, which is Solomon's; threescore valiant men are about it, of the valiant of Israel. (Song of Solomon 3:7)
).
The 60 cities of Bashan are several times referred (as,
Deut. 3:4
4
And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. (Deuteronomy 3:4)
). A widow under 60 was not to be "taken into the number" (
1 Tim. 5:9
9
Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, (1 Timothy 5:9)
).
Under Menahem, there were still 60,000 rich men in Israel (
2 Kings 15:19-20
19
And Pul the king of Assyria came against the land: and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents of silver, that his hand might be with him to confirm the kingdom in his hand.
20
And Menahem exacted the money of Israel, even of all the mighty men of wealth, of each man fifty shekels of silver, to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria turned back, and stayed not there in the land. (2 Kings 15:19‑20)
) a talent being 3000 shekels.
Why mention that Emmaus was 60 furlongs from Jerusalem (
Luke 24:13
13
And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. (Luke 24:13)
)?
