Site of “the cities of the plain” is not known, but variously referred to the southern end, the northern end, and bottom of the Dead Sea. Sodom is often referred to in Scripture as a symbol of wickedness and warning to sinners (Deut. 29:23; Isa. 1:9-10; 13:19; Jer. 23:14; 49:18; Ezek. 16:49-50; Matt. 10:15; 11:23; Rev. 11:8).
