37. Th' Atoning Work Is Done

Th’ atoning work is done;
 
The Victim’s blood is shed;
 
And Jesus now is gone
 
His people’s cause to plead:
 
He sits in heaven their great High Priest,
 
And bears their names upon His breast.
“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” (John 19:30)
“But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.” (John 19:34)
“Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.” (Hebrews 7:25)
“Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.” (Hebrews 4:14)

The mercy-seat" above;
 
For justice had withstood
 
The purposes of love;
 
But justice now withstands no more,
 
And mercy yields her boundless store.
“And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times. Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat.” (Leviticus 16:14-15)

Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor? What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction. And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory. Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?” (Romans 9:15-24)

And though awhile He be
 
Hid from the eyes of men,
 
His people look to see
 
Their great High Priest again.
 
In brightest glory He will come,
 
And take His waiting people home.
