“False worship is on the increase; false creeds and false prophets abound. Indeed, as we see, there never was a time when the devil had so many preachers to delude our fellow countrymen.”
A Higher Critic told a congregation in the West End of Glasgow, “The old gospel of our grandparents is out of date. We must have the message of the twentieth century.” That Sunday evening a young man, who had gone with a sin-burdened soul, came away disappointed — there was no salvation in that “intellectual” sermon to meet his need. On the way home he passed an open-air gospel service, and heard this sung: —
“Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood
Shall never lose its power,
Till all the ransomed church of God
Be saved to sin no more.”
“That will do; that’s not out of date,” he said to himself, and, receiving Christ by simple faith, he has proved the old gospel to be the power of God unto salvation. He now sings:
“I will believe, I do believe,
That Jesus died for me,
That on the cross he shed His Blood
From sin to set me free.”
