About This Product
Virtually every respected Bible teacher of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century has taught that Genesis 1:1-2 refers to an original creation of God in which the earth passed into a state of chaos. Then, in the six days mentioned in the latter part of the chapter (vss. 3-31), God conducted a reconstruction of the earth, adding to it the creation of animal life and mankind (vss. 21, 27). Hence, they conclude that there is a gap of undisclosed time between the creation of the earth (vss. 1-2) and its reconstruction (vss. 3-31).
Most evangelical Christians today reject this interpretation of Genesis 1, because "Young Earth Creationists" have presented certain pieces of information from geology that have convinced them that there was not an original earth created by God prior to the one on which we live today. They see Genesis 1:1-2 as part of God's work in the six days in Genesis 1:3-31. To them, the chapter is all one continuous explanation of creation. They conclude, therefore, that the Genesis record indicates that the earth is relatively young—about 6000 years old—because the six days (wherein time begins) mark God's creative beginning.
Many have asked which of these interpretations is the correct one. The author gives a simple presentation of what Scripture says about the subject and draws his conclusions from it.
