It will soon come for us to usher in a day of unimagined glory. As the shadows fall about our feet we are waiting for the dawn. We say to our Lord and Master, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And
“In secret love the Master to each one whispers low;
I am at hand, work faster! Behold the sunset glow!
And each one smileth sweet, who hears the Master’s feet.”
B.M.
But He comes in to tarry with us. He knows how much we need Him in the “sunset hour.” He has brightened the way; He will glorify the end. And the end must find us bringing sinners to His blessed feet and telling out the story of His wondrous love. He stretches out His wounded hands over every battlefield. He says to us, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” This is His command. We can go with every Testament we send, and we must send. And when we leave the world with empty hands, may we enter heaven with “many sheaves.” O God of the New Year, keep us true to Thee! Thy willing servants, may we “glory only in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
I look up to heaven and I say, “Christ is coming!” I listen for the “shout” that shall call us home, “the archangel’s voice,” “the trump of God.” He may come any moment. I am ready, thank God, but what of these? I look towards the battlefields where souls are rushing into eternity, and I say, “Oh! my God, save those souls.”
“Then, with a rush, the intolerable craving
Shivers throughout me like a trumpet call:
Oh, to save these! To perish for their saving,
Die for their life, be offered for them all!”
HEYMAN WREFORD.
