It shall greatly help ye to understand Scripture if thou mark not only what is spoken or written, but of whom and to whom, with what words, at what time, where, to what intent, with what circumstances, considering what goeth before and what followeth after.

Miles Coverdale (in modern English) suggests considering ten things:
1. What is actually stated?
2. By whom?
3. To whom?
4. How?
5. When?
6. Where?
7. Why?
8. What were the circumstances?
9. What led to these circumstances?
10. What consequences follow or are prophesied?
When we have a basic understanding of a passage of Scripture, we are better able to apply it, to ask:
11. How does this apply in my personal life, my family life, my assembly life, and the lives of those with whom I associate?
Above all, always remember that God never meant for you or for me to read His Word without His help. Ask Him for it, and thank Him for it.
