Wastepaper Baskets

Dear soldier or sailor, have you ever written a letter wanting an answer, and not received it? You may have, for your letter may have been thrown into a wastepaper basket as mine was. I want you to think about prayer. Now prayer is like a letter, not sent to man, but to God. If you really pray, “God forgive me, a poor sinner,” God is sure, for Jesus Christ’s sake to forgive you at once. You may not feel forgiven, but you may believe it. That’s it, believe and be saved, not for your sake, but for His and for His sake alone.
I wrote to a great man, an influential Sir―, and asked him to write to Lord― or the King. His answer came to me thus: “I have no doubt my letter would follow yours into the wastepaper basket.” Meanwhile, we can, like Daniel of old, confess our sins and those of our nation, and pray for national repentance and revival of spiritual life, and our prayers will go where there are no wastepaper baskets.
Now is this not a beautiful thought — that our Father in heaven will receive and take notice of our prayers and be sure to answer them in His time? Only keep on praying. “Ask and ye shall receive,” for there are no wastepaper baskets above.
