Wolves of Palestine were numerous and the dread of shepherds, as they were a terrible enemy to sheep

(Matt. 7:15; 10:16¹⁵Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. (Matthew 7:15)
¹⁶Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. (Matthew 10:16); John 10:12¹²But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. (John 10:12); Acts 20:29²⁹For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. (Acts 20:29)).
