Christ’s Obedience

The Lord Jesus was the perfect, dependent, obedient man. “For even Christ pleased not Himself” (Romans 15:3).

Here are three aspects of His obedience that are good to consider as we remember Him today:

Coming into the world, the Lord had before Him the will of God, for He could say, “Then said He, Lo, I come to do Thy will, O God” (Hebrews 10:9).

Passing through the world, He could say, “I seek not Mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent Me” (John 5:30). “For I came down from heaven, not to do Mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me” (John 6:38). “For I do always those things that please Him” (John 8:29).

Furthermore, in going out of the world He said, “Nevertheless not My will, but Thine, be done” (Luke 22:42).

The perfect Man, the Son of God,

He always did the Father’s will,

While here on earth the path He trod,

From Bethlehem to Calvary’s hill.

Redeemed

The other night at a gospel service we sang an old hymn that I had not sung for quite some time. It was written by James Martin Gray (May 11, 1851 – September 21, 1935).

This is the first verse and chorus:

Nor silver nor gold hath obtained my redemption;

No riches of earth could have saved my poor soul.

The blood of the cross is my only foundation;

The death of my Savior now maketh me whole.

Refrain:

I am redeemed, but not with silver;

I am bought, but not with gold;

Bought with a pricethe blood of Jesus,

Precious price of love untold.

I am sure the author was thinking of the Scripture, “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and goldBut with the precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:18-19).

It made me thankful that my redemption is not based on something that changes in value, but with that which is eternally precious to the heart of God. Have you obtained this redemption through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ?

Monthly Question Page

Q. Could you please explain why the Spirit is called the “The Comforter?” “And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever” (John 14:16).

A. God meets our present needs, and ministers Christ to us through the operation of the Holy Spirit, who was sent down on the Day of Pentecost. Therefore, the Spirit is referred to as “The Comforter” because it was comfort that the disciples needed on that occasion. Their hearts were troubled and afraid at the thought of the Lord leaving them alone in the world and returning to heaven. But He tells them, “I will not leave you comfortless” (John 14:18).

He also refers to the Spirit as anotherComforter.” The Lord had been their Comforter and supplier while they were with Him. When they needed comfort, they could go to Him directly. But, now that He was going to return to heaven and be physically absent from them, He would send another.” The Comforter will never leave us. As our verse indicates, “That He may abide with you for ever.” So long as we are here in this world, the Spirit will bring Christ before us according to the need.

We would love to hear from you.

The Time of Trouble

“Call upon Me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify Me” (Psalm 50:15).

Here are four statements that are good to say from our hearts when we are in times of trouble:

First: He brought me here; it is by His will I am in this difficult place; in that I will rest.

Next: He will here keep me in His love, and give me grace in this trial to behave as His child.

Then: He will make the trial a blessingteaching me the lessons He means me to learn, and working in me the grace He intends for me.

Last: In His good time, He can bring me out againhow and when, only HE KNOWS.

In short, say I AM HERE:

1. By God’s appointment.

2. In His keeping.

3. Under His training.

4. For His time.

And remember, “In the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion: in the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me; He shall set me up upon a rock” (Psalm 27:5).

Monthly Scripture Reading

Jude

1 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:

2 Mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.

3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.

5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not.

6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, He hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

Bearing Fruit

A fruit tree does not struggle to control itself in order to bring forth fruit. An apple tree does not strive to bear apples, or a pear tree to produce pears. No, it stands there still and quiet in the orchard. It spreads its branches and leaves to the warmth of the sunshine, the air and the rain. It digs its roots deep into the soil for the vital nourishment of food and water. Then, if it is a good tree, it bears fruit.

So it is with the Christian. If we are to bear fruit for God, we must dig our roots deep into the love of God, drinking in the nourishing water, air and sunshine of His Word in the power of His Spirit.

The Lord said to His disciples, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in Me” (John 15:4). This is how the believer can and will quietly bear fruit for God in His daily life. He wants us to produce “much fruit” (John 15:5). He said to His disciples, and it applies to us, “Ye have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain” (John 15:16).

Dear Young Christian:

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Romans 12:1).

Do you only do the minimumsimply what is expected of you and no more? Or do you go the extra mile? How will it be when you stand before the Lord? Will you have gone out of your way to serve Him by helping a fellow-believer, by helping with a gospel outreach, or by generally being available in His service, whatever He may have for you to do? Will He commend you for being “fervent in spirit; serving the Lord” (Romans 12:11).

As we start out on another week of Christian living, let’s think seriously about giving ourselves wholeheartedly to the Lord and His service. “So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do” (Luke 17:10).

Your Christian Friend,

Jim Hyland

Three Facts

Three great facts make up the testimony of our Lord Jesus, and we who know Him as our Savior and Lord, and who own His name, should understand the full force of them and maintain them without shame or fear.

The Apostle John bears witness to these facts in Revelation 1:5.

1. Christ has been here: “Jesus Christ, who is the Faithful Witness.”

2. He is no longer here: “The First Begotten of the dead.”

3. He is coming back: “The Prince of the kings of the earth.”

As we consider these three blessed truths today, there will be worship produced in our souls, and we will spontaneously say from our hearts, “To Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen” (Revelation 1:6).

Twice Saved

“Who then can be saved” (Luke 18:26)?
“Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord
shall be saved”
(Acts 2:21).

Perhaps one of the most miraculous stories ever told took place at Niagara Falls on a Saturday afternoon, July 9, 1960. A man from Niagara Falls, New York took two children for a boat ride in the upper Niagara River. The boat developed motor trouble, capsized into the river and all three were thrown into the upper rapids. The man went over the Falls and was killed. At the same time, the 17-year-old girl was pulled out of the water only 20 feet from the very edge of the Falls and her younger brother, wearing only a life jacket and a bathing suit, went over the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. He came out alive to tell his story. His name was Roger Woodward.

The tourist boat, “Maid of the Mist,” happened to be at the bottom of the falls and the captain heard Roger crying, “Help! Help!” A life ring was thrown to him. He grabbed it and was hauled to safety.

A year later, he accepted Christ as his Savior. Later on, as a young man, he said, “I guess the Lord saved me the first time so that I could be saved a second time.”

Prosperity

A recent advertisement read:

The Way to Prosperity is Through Education!

While it is true that education may help us to get a job and “provide things honest in the sight of all men” (Romans 12:17), it is still not God’s formula for spiritual success. God’s recipe for success is contained in His words to Joshua on the banks of the Jordan River just before entering the land of Canaan. “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success” (Joshua 1:8).

To apply this to our life today, there are three things we need to do to have real success in life:

1. Read the Word of God

2. Meditate on the Word of God

3. Obey the Word of God.

This does not mean that we will necessarily become rich or have success by the world’s standards, but it does mean that we will have spiritual prosperity, and isn’t that what really counts in our Christian experience?
