Can’t Save Ourselves

The evangelist Dwight L. Moody (1837-1899), recounts the following incident:

“I remember a lady in the south of England who became quite angry when I made the statement: ‘None of this congregation will be saved until they stop trying to save themselves.’

As soon as the service was over down the aisle from the gallery she came, and said to me, ‘You have made me perfectly miserable.’

‘Indeed,’ I said, ‘how’s that.’

‘Why, I always thought that if I kept on trying, God would save me some time, and now you tell me to stop trying. What then am I to do?’

‘Let the Lord save you,’ I replied.”

No, we cannot save ourselves! However the Bible clearly states, “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save” (Isaiah 59:1). When we realize there is nothing we can do, then and only then will we turn to the Lord and let Him do the work. It is not a question of what we can do but, “Repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 20:21).
