Numbers in Scripture: #1

The number one is God’s number of supremacy and exclusiveness. It is also the number of God’s unity, as we have in the seven things listed in Ephesians 4:4-6:

1. One body.

2. One Spirit.

3. One hope.

4. One Lord.

5. One faith.

6. One baptism.

7. One God and Father of all.

These seven things complete a perfect circle of God’s oneness in person and purpose.

Here are a couple of other examples:

• “One mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:15).

• “One offering” (Hebrews 10:14).

The number “one” leaves no room for additions from man. It is God’s number signifying His divine right, dominion, and mastery. As the last writer of the Old Testament emphatically states: “Have we not all one Father? hath not one God created us” (Malachi 2:10)?
