Dear Young Christian:

“How are you doing?”

This is a typical greeting in North America. We use it all the time, but usually without any thought of making a sincere inquiry, much less of waiting to hear the answer. We hope people will say, “Fine, thanks,” and change the subject.

People all around us yearn for someone to care. David lamented this sad fact when he said, “I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul” (Psalm 142:4).

One thing we know for sure is that the Lord Jesus genuinely cares for us. But do we care for one another in the same way? The Apostle Paul exhorted the Corinthian Christians, “that the members should have the same care one for another” (1 Corinthians 12:25).

Take time to ask someone today, “How are you doing?” Then, wait for the answer, and show real care and concern. Who knows what a blessing you can be, just by listening!

 Your Christian Friend,

 Jim Hyland

We would love to hear from you.
