Numbers in Scripture: #3 Three has several connotations in Scripture. We will just consider two of them. 1. It is God’s number of complete witness. For example: “At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death” (Deuteronomy 17:6). “In the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established” (Matthew 18:16). “This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” (2 Corinthians 13:1). “Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses” (1 Timothy 5:19). 2. It denotes death and resurrection. For example: “The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again” (Luke 24:7). “He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:4).
