Lifted Up “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up” (John 3:14). These three statements of the Lord all refer to His crucifixion, and are three facts worthy of consideration: 1. Through our Savior’s death, He has brought us life, just as when Moses lifted up the serpent on a pole. “If a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived” (Numbers 21:9). 2. His death proved that He was the Son of Man. “But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the Son of Man, that thou visitest him? Thou madest Him a little lower than the angels … for the suffering of death” (Hebrews 2:6-7,9). 3. His death has allowed Him to open His arms wide to draw all peoples to Himself. “Our Savior; who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2:3-4).
