Q. Could you please explain why the Spirit is called the “The Comforter?” “And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever” (John 14:16).

A. God meets our present needs, and ministers Christ to us through the operation of the Holy Spirit, who was sent down on the Day of Pentecost. Therefore, the Spirit is referred to as “The Comforter” because it was comfort that the disciples needed on that occasion. Their hearts were troubled and afraid at the thought of the Lord leaving them alone in the world and returning to heaven. But He tells them, “I will not leave you comfortless” (John 14:18).

He also refers to the Spirit as anotherComforter.” The Lord had been their Comforter and supplier while they were with Him. When they needed comfort, they could go to Him directly. But, now that He was going to return to heaven and be physically absent from them, He would send another.” The Comforter will never leave us. As our verse indicates, “That He may abide with you for ever.” So long as we are here in this world, the Spirit will bring Christ before us according to the need.

We would love to hear from you.
