Redeemed

The other night at a gospel service we sang an old hymn that I had not sung for quite some time. It was written by James Martin Gray (May 11, 1851 – September 21, 1935).

This is the first verse and chorus:

Nor silver nor gold hath obtained my redemption;

No riches of earth could have saved my poor soul.

The blood of the cross is my only foundation;

The death of my Savior now maketh me whole.

Refrain:

I am redeemed, but not with silver;

I am bought, but not with gold;

Bought with a pricethe blood of Jesus,

Precious price of love untold.

I am sure the author was thinking of the Scripture, “Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and goldBut with the precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot” (1 Peter 1:18-19).

It made me thankful that my redemption is not based on something that changes in value, but with that which is eternally precious to the heart of God. Have you obtained this redemption through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ?
