Gospel Hardened

“He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy” (Proverbs 29:1).

When I was growing up, I used to hear people say, that someone was “gospel hardened.” Back then I wasn’t exactly sure what it meant.

However, it simply means that someone who hears the gospel over and over again, and either rejects or neglects its message can, after a while, become so callous and insensible to it that it has no effect. This is especially true of those who are brought up in Christian homes where the Bible is read every day, and where they are taken to gospel meetings on a regular basis. It is like someone having a train track running behind their house. When they first move in, they wake up and hear every night train that goes through. But, after a while, they sleep right through it, just because they are so used to it, and it ceases to affect them.

I hope I have no readers like that. Four times the Bible warns, “Harden not your heart” (Psalm 95:8; Hebrews 3:8; 3:15; 4:7). No, instead, accept God’s wonderful salvation through the Lord Jesus and His sacrifice at Calvary.
