The Cup of Judgment

 “And He went a little further, and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me: nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt” (Matthew 26:39).
“The cup which My Father hath given Me, shall I not drink it?” (John 18:11).

The cup the Lord Jesus was referring to in these verses was the cup of judgment against sin that He was going to (in figurative language) drink in those three hours of darkness when He, “bare our sins in His own body on the tree” (1 Peter 2:24).

Here are the lines of a hymn, written by Mrs. Ann Ross Cousins, which sum up this sacred truth so very well:

Death and the curse were in our cup

O Christ, ’twas full for Thee!

But Thou hast drained the last dark drop,

’Tis empty now for me.

That bitter cup — love drank it up;

Left but the love for me.
