Thyself

“Take heed unto thyself” (1 Timothy 4:16).

So often we are more worried about what others are doing than we are about our own conduct. While it is true “that the members should have the same care one for another” (1 Corinthians 12:25), and that we are told, “Bear ye one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2), yet, in the final analysis, we are responsible to the Lord as to our own conduct and attitude.

After the Lord rose from the dead, He told Peter something of the work and pathway of faith and service that He had for him. As Peter listened to the Lord, he turned to John who was standing by, and said to the Lord, “And what shall this man do?” (John 21:21). Here is the answer the Lord gave Him: “If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou Me” (John 21:22).

In other words, the Lord was saying, “I have a path for John, and I will take care of that, but you are responsible to follow Me, in the path that I have for you.”

It is not a question of how well my brother or sister follows in the path of faith, but whether or not I am faithful in following the Lord.
