Dear Young Christian:

I’m sure that we all agree that everyone needs and seeks happiness. A bumper sticker on a car I recently saw said, I enjoy a good laugh! I’m sure we all agree with that sentiment.

What people are happy about or find funny is only secondary. What makes one person laugh is not what amuses someone else. We all laugh at different things. If our happiness only consists of a frivolous joke, or some frivolous event, it is going to be fleeting and superficial at best, and it will be gone with the laugh or the act.

However, there is true and lasting happiness. “Whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he” (Proverbs 16:20). Real happiness lies in knowing the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior, and owning Him as Lord of our lives. The Lord wants us to have a deep, lasting joy that is not dependant on what we are doing, hearing, or saying. This is confirmed by the words of the Apostle John, when he wrote, “And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full” (1 John 1:4).
