RumorsPart 1

When was the last time you repeated something to someone that you knew you shouldn’t have? Perhaps you knew it would stir up some strife or contention, maybe even create animosity, but you did it anyway. Here are two good Scriptures to keep in mind the next time you go to tell something you shouldn’t or something that you were told in confidence:

“A whisperer separateth chief friends” (Proverbs 16:28).

“He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends” (Proverbs 17:9).

Yes, repeating a matter, and spreading rumors and stories can be very damaging. It can break up friendships, families, and even marriages. Once things are said, they can’t be taken back, much as we would often like to. We can say we are sorry, but the hurt and damage may be permanent.

When we learn to control our tongue, we save not only others a lot of grief but ourselves as well. “Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles” (Proverbs 21:23).
