The Sea of Life

“He maketh the storm a calm,
so that the waves thereof are still”
(Psalm 107:29).

It is a beautiful tropical day, and the Caribbean Sea is sparkling in the sunlight, as our boat, the Barracuda, plows through the waters, making its way down through the Grenadine islands south of Saint Vincent. The boat is noisy and crowded, but otherwise, all is well.

As we sail along, I am reminded of the disciples on the Sea of Galilee under very different circumstances. “And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full” (Mark 4:37). It isn’t all smooth sailing on the Sea of Life. There are good days and bad days. But, whether rough or smooth, the Lord cares and is able to bring us through.

As the Lord remained asleep in the back of the ship, the disciples began to wonder if He really cared or was aware of what was happening. They awoke Him and asked, “Master, carest Thou not that we perish” (verse 38)? Did He care? Was He aware of what was going on? Was He able to control the situation? Of course! “And He arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm” (verse 39).
