Dear Young Christian:

“Be not, as the hypocrites”(Matthew 6:16)

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary give the following definition of the word“hypocrisy:”

“A feigning to be what one is not or to believe what one does not: behavior that contradicts what one claims to believe or feel: the false assumption of an appearance of virtue or religion.

What God wants in our lives is reality! King David’s prayer was, “Lead me into the land of uprightness” (Psalm 143:10). In other words, “Don’t let me pretend to be something I’m not.” Even as believers we can often put on an outward show of godliness, perhaps to hide some sin or practice we don’t want others to see. “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy” (James 3:17).

Remember, you may fool many people, but not God. He knows us through and through.

Your Christian Friend,

Jim Hyland
