Fame

Two famous athletes were being questioned by a sports writer as to their legacy and accomplishments. Ted Williams pointed to his success in baseball. Michael Jordan noted his achievements in basketball. How sad! A lifetime quest for fleeting fame and the applause of this world. Here is what the Bible has to say on the matter: “Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air” (1 Corinthians 9:24-26). Athletes strive for a prize that is corruptible at best. Their names come and go from the sports pages and news casts of society.

In contrast, the Apostle Paul had the best goal of all, declaring, “For to me to live is Christ … I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:21; 3:14). What are you living for? Is it a flash of glory and fame in this world, or is it for Christ and eternal consequences?
