Love Those You Serve

Steve Jobs was an American entrepreneur, businessman, inventor, and industrial designer. Jobs was the chairman, and the chief executive officer, and a co-founder of Apple Inc. On a calendar page hanging in our kitchen this month I notice a quote from Mr. Jobshere is what it said: “The only way to do great work is to love what you do.”

As I thought about this, I realized that to do great work for the Lord we must first be like the Hebrew servant in the Old Testament, who said, “I love my Master” (Exodus 21:5). Love for our Lord and Master is first and essential. Then it is love for those we serve. “By love serve one another” (Galatians 5:13). We will have a love for what we are doing if we have love for those we are doing it for. Here is how Paul sums up the motive and method for our Christian service: “In singleness of your heart, as unto Christ; Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men” (Ephesians 6:5-7). If the motive is love, we can indeed do great work for the Lord, and love what we are doing at the same time.
