To His Knees

“Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime” (Daniel 6:10).

Abraham Lincoln was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861, until his assassination in April 1865. He is quoted as saying, “I have been driven to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go; my wisdom and that of all around me seemed insufficient for the day.”

In the Old Testament, Daniel was in a similar position. Under each king of Babylon (Nebuchadnezzar, Belshazzar, and Darius), he was promoted and advanced to high positions in the kingdom. He evidently felt the need of daily, regular prayernot just when things were tough, but also when things were good. Like President Lincoln and many before and after him, he felt driven to his knees every day.

How good it is for us to feel this as well. It is not wrong to feel driven if it drives us to our knees in dependence on the Lord.
