Dear Young Christian:

Here in the Eastern Caribbean, where I am travelling this week, there is a saying amongst some Christians that goes like this,

Labor is rest and pain is sweet,

If Thou, my Lord art near!

While it may be a bit of a stretch, as work is work, and none of us like pain, yet there is much truth in the joy of having the assurance of the Lord with us through every circumstance of life. On one occasion, the Apostle Paul summed up his life for the Lord by saying, “In labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft” (2 Corinthians 11:23). Yet, in all his labor, discomfort, and pain, he had the comfort and joy of being able to say, “Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me” (2 Timothy 4:17).

This week there will be much to do, and perhaps some pain as well. But it is a great thing to have the sweetness of the Lord’s company at all times.

Your Christian Friend,

Jim Hyland

We would love to hear from you.
