Christ’s Death

“Christ died for us…He by the grace of God should taste death for every man…That through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil…And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross…Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures…For in that He died, He died unto sin once…It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God…We were reconciled to God by the death of His Son…For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him” (Romans 5:8; Hebrews 2:9; Hebrews 2:14; Philippians 2:8; 1 Corinthians 15:3; Romans 6:10; Romans 8:34; Romans 5:10; 1 Thessalonians 4:14).

What a wonderful truth the death of Christ is! There was no other way that we could be brought into blessing and relationship with God apart from the death of Christ. As we think about this, and remember the Lord Jesus in His death today, may there be a deepening appreciation of what took place at Calvary, when Jesus died for us.

Life

“I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

Unsaved people think that they are having fun if they can drink and party, and as they say, “live it up.” But the next day, life, with its problems and frustrations, is still there. The Lord Jesus came to give the abundant life; life full and overflowing; a happy life; one in which there is Someone who really does care for us and wants to carry our sorrows and our burdens (for Christians do have them sometimes). Nothing that man offers can give the peace that a Christian has. What God offers is not just for a night or a moment, or even just for this life…it is for eternity!

A girl at college told a friend of mine, “I wish I had the peace you have.”

He told her, “That’s only possible by trusting in the Lord Jesus and having Him as your peace and joy.”

What about you, do you have abundant life? It is being offered freely to you at this very moment.

Hemmed In

Colorfully embroidered on a canvas and hung on the kitchen wall of a home I was visiting, were the following words:

A DAY HEMMED IN PRAYER
SELDOM COMES UNRAVELED!

To hem something is to completely surround it. We use the expression, “hemmed in.” In other words we are encircled by something and cannot move or escape. When my mother hemmed the cuffs of my pants when I was a boy, or the hem of my sister’s skirt, she went all the way around. In fact if she didn’t it would soon come unraveled.

Not only do we need to begin and end the day with prayer, but we need to completely “hem” it. All day long, wherever we are, we should be in the attitude of prayer. This is our power and resource, as we are exhorted, “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:18). A day hemmed in prayer may not be an easy day, but it will be a blessed day.

Minor ProphetsZephaniah

This book is, for the most part, a book of judgment, as indicated by the following statement: “The great day of the Lord is near…That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness” (Zephaniah 1:14-15). It is judgment of hypocritical Judah and all the nations.

There had been great revival under the godly king Josiah, but the hearts of the people remained unchanged, and they had returned to the worship of Baal and many other wicked practices.

However, in the midst of all this there is comfort for the godly, and a future day of blessing anticipated. “The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; He will save, He will rejoice over thee with joy; He will rest in His love, He will joy over thee with singing” (Zephaniah 3:17). So, in the end the Lord will have the joy of having His earthly people gathered around Himself.

So, we learn, that in spite of sin and failure, the Lord delights in His people and will bless them in grace. What a comfort this is for us, His heavenly people, as well.

God’s Calendar

The next great event on God’s calendar is the RAPTURE of His saintevery believer in Christ. What a wonderful day that will be when all the children of God will be brought together in that great meeting in the air. “For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).

The word RAPTURE does not appear in the New Testament, but the idea is all through the Bible. The word means, “to snatch away,”“to catch up,”“to be caught up.”

The coming of the Lord for us is an absolute, undeniable, irrevocable truth.Regardless of what the agnostics or the atheists or the modern unbelieving theologians say, Christ is coming again! The Biblethe inspired indestructible, infallible, and inerrant Word of God tells us so!

Sincerity

“That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ” (Philippians 1:10).

The word sincere comes from two Latin words, sine cera, which mean “without wax.” This used to be stamped on the bottom of pottery during the Roman Empire when the piece was certified as having no flaws. A dishonest potter would take a piece which was flawed and fill in the cracks with wax. But when it was held up to the sunlight the flaws would appear. This is a great lesson to learn because, in Scripture, we are likened to vessels. For example, “We have this treasure in earthen vessels” (2 Corinthians 4:7).

The Lord wants reality in our Christian life. Joshua exhorted the people in His day, Joshua 24:14, “Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve Him in sincerity and in truth” (Joshua 24:14). We can’t fool God, He sees right through us, but are we being hypocrites in front of others? Are we “faking it”? Or are we sine cera? Sincere!

Dear Young Christian:

“Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint” (Isaiah 40:30-31).

This is one of my favorite verses from the Bible. On the one hand it shows that natural energy, even of youth, isn’t enough to meet the situations of life and the attacks of the enemy, Satan. But on the other hand, it shows that there is no lack of power to rise above the difficulties, run with spiritual energy, and walk in the path of faith through this wicked world.

The Apostle Paul records a similar truth when he says, “When I am weak, then am I strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10). And, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13). Let’s go forth this week with the realization that, in Christ, we have everything we need to get us through no matter what we have to face.

Your Christian Friend,

Jim Hyland

His Heart

“He first loved us” (1 John 4:19).

The trial and crucifixion of the Lord Jesus fully exposed the heart of man like nothing else before or after. The depth of hatred towards God and His Son was culminated in the cry, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him” (John 19:15).

On the other hand, the heart of God in all its love and grace never shone forth like it did at the cross. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son” (John 3:16). God has fully shown His love by the giving of His only Son. “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him” (1 John 4:9).

The word “manifest” means to “clearly show” and God has clearly shown His love in the greatest possible way. As we consider that love today, and remember the work of Calvary, it will draw out our hearts more in love for Him, and the more our hearts are touched by His love, the more praise and thanksgiving there will be.

Hide-and-Seek

“And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb” (Revelation 6:15-16).

When we were boys we used to play hide-and-seek. The trick was to be able to hide so well that no one could find us. But in the day of judgment there will be no hide-and-seek. Nobody will be able to escape as much as they would like to. The next verse says, “For the great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?” (Revelation 6:17).

The question is raised in the book of Hebrews, “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation” (Hebrew 2:3). The answer is in the verses we have quoted from Revelation 6. There is no escape! The way of escape is available now through the death of Christ. “Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him” (Romans 5:9). Don’t play hide-and-seek with God! It just doesn’t work.

Tribulation

For some of us it is hard to believe, but fourteen years ago today the Twin Towers in New York City came crashing down in a terrorist attack unlike anything the United States had ever experienced before. Some who are reading this won’t even remember the day, but for many of us who are older it is permanently imprinted on our minds. In fact I remember exactly where I was when it happened. I was in a hotel in Montgomery, Alabama.

But 9/11, as it has been dubbed, was nothing compared to what is ahead for this world during the tribulation. The Lord, in warning, said, “For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be” (Matthew 24:21).

For those of us who are saved it’s a great comfort to know that we will be gone from this world by that time. The promise to us is, “Because thou hast kept the word of My patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.” (Revelation 3:10). We are to be looking for the Lord to come at any moment, and perhaps it will be today.
