God Listens

God ListensJust Speak

What a wonderful truth it isGod is a good listener! We can come to Him at anytime of the day or night. He doesn’t keep office hours, there is no call-waiting, and no being put on hold…just an invitation to “Pour out your heart before Him” (Psalm 62:8). When was the last time you had a real heart-to-heart talk with God your Father? I don’t mean just a few things quickly and casually mentioned in a hurried prayer, but a real heart-to-heart talk? He is waiting, and He wants to hear your voice. The Bridegroom in the book of the Song of Solomon said to the bride, “Let me see thy countenance.” But then he added, “Let me hear thy voice.” Then he added, “For sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely” (Song of Solomon 2:3).

Remember too, there is no time limit at the throne of grace, and no fear of refusal, or being cut off before we’re finished. “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

God Speaks

God SpeaksJust Listen!

Good sound advice, isn’t it? Yes, when God speaks we need to be all ears. Several times the Bible reminds us, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear” (Matthew 11:15). As you read your Bible today listen for the voice of God your Father speaking to you. He has a wonderful message, whether it is counsel, comfort, exhortation or correction.

This is the era of noise, confusion and just general helter-skelter and discombobulation. We tend to be preoccupied with our own problems and busyness, and we are not always good listeners. As they say, “It goes in one ear and out the other.” The result is we often end up in difficultysometimes serious, sometimes not. But don’t tune out when it comes to the voice of God. Let’s be like Samuel who, after realizing that God was calling him, immediately responded, “Speak; for Thy servant heareth” (1 Samuel 3:10). As a result of having a listening ear he received a very serious and important message that he would have otherwise missed.

Dear Young Christian:

I am thinking today about a prayer in the Old Testament, that would be a good prayer for each of us to pray on a daily basis. The prayer is this, “Open Thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law” (Psalm 119:18). Of course we need to first open the Bible, and then pray that the Lord will open our eyes in the power of the Spirit; and that we would understand and enjoy what we read as well. If this is our prayer then we can be assured that He will do it, just like He did for those He walked with to Emmaus. “Then opened He their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures” (Luke 24:45).

Opened eyes and understanding are essential to spiritual growth and our walk with the Lord. If you walk down the street with your eyes closed you are going to trip and fall or wander out into dangerous traffic. The same is true of our spiritual life as well. Satan has many traps and obstacles to trip us up. Walk with your spiritual eyes and understanding open this week, and you will not stumble in the path of faith.

Your Christian Friend,

Jim Hyland

Remember

“We will remember Thy love more than wine”
(Song of Solomon 1:4).

The most precious time that any believer on earth can spend is the privilege of spending an hour or so on Lord’s Day morning remembering the love of the Lord Jesus Christ, and breaking bread in the way He has asked us to do. His love was greater than any love we’ll ever know. He was willing to die for us so that we would not have to. The hymn-writer put it this way…

“If that isn’t love, the ocean is dry,
There’s no stars in the sky, and the sparrow can’t fly.
If that isn’t love, then heaven’s a myth;
There’s no feeling like this
if that isn’t love!”

Let’s enjoy the remembrance of the Lord Jesus’ love today. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

Believe God

“Impossible for God to lie” (Hebrews 6:18).
“I believe God” (Acts 27:25).

Sometimes I have heard people say, referring to some statement from the Bible, “Well, I find it hard to believe that!” Perhaps they would be more honest if they said, “I find it hard to believe God!”

When God speaks we are to accept what He says without question. Those who don’t, will find out too late that what God has said about sin and eternity is the truth. When the Bible states that, “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God,” (Romans 3:23), that is exactly what it means. When we read about hell and the consequences of rejecting God’s offer of mercy and salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ and the work of Calvary, it is no exaggeration. God means what He says, and says what He means.

Our first responsibility is, “repent ye, and believe the gospel” (Mark 1:15). Or, as Paul and Silas put it to the jailor in the prison in Philippi, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).

“In…”

“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world” (1 John 2:16).
“Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Colossians 2:2-3

These two verses give us quite a contrast, don’t they? “In the world,” there is everything that is of Satan to keep the unbeliever insensitive to his ruin, and to discourage and keep the believer from enjoying His blessings in Christ. There is nothing in this world, apart from the Lord Jesus, that is for blessing and edification. “The whole world lieth in wickedness” (1 John 5:19).

However, “in Christ” we have everything for our good and blessing, and all we need to walk through this world for the glory of the Lord, and with spiritual wisdom and understanding. We have treasures and blessings that will never be taken from us and that we will enjoy for all eternity. Dig out those treasures by reading and meditating on the Word of God, and enjoying the person of Christ every day.

Minor ProphetsHaggai

Haggai is the first prophet after the return of the Jewish remnant from the captivity in Babylon. He encourages the people to rebuild the temple after a lapse of fourteen years. “Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the Lord’s house should be built” (Haggai 1:2). They were more occupied with their own houses and interests than with the work of the Lord and His house. So the question is raised, “Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your ceiled houses, and this house lie waste” (Haggai 1:4)?

We also have the confirmation of His presence and the assurance that His promises would not fail, in spite of their failure and indifference. “For I am with you, saith the Lord of hosts: According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so My spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not” (Haggai 2:4-5).

This book has a special lesson and warning for us in these “last days” of Christianity. We need to be stirred up as to maintaining the truth of the church, and rest on the Lord’s faithfulness and unchanging promises. He is faithful!

Unwavering FaithPart 1

“The cloud is consumed and vanisheth away” (Job 7:9).

The captain of the ship goes on to relate,

“When asked if he knew how thick the fog around the ship was, Mr. Müller replied, ‘No, my eye is not on the density of the fog, but on the living God who controls every circumstance of my life.’ He then knelt down and prayed one of the most simple prayers I have ever heard. When finished I was going to pray, but he put his hand on my shoulder and told me not to pray. ‘As you do not believe He has lifted the fog, there is no need whatever for you to pray about it.’

“I looked at him and George Müller said, ‘Captain, I have known my Lord for 57 years and there has never been a single day when I failed to get an audience with the King. Get up, Captain, and open the door and you will find the fog has gone.’

“I got up and the fog was indeed gone, and on that Saturday afternoon George Müller kept his promised engagement.”

What a lesson from a man of faith, and we are told, “Whose faith follow” (Hebrews 13:7).

Unwavering FaithPart 1

“Let him ask in faith, nothing wavering” (James 1:6).

During his life George Müller, of Bristol England received more than 1,000,000 pounds from the Lord without advertising or soliciting…every penny came as an answer to prayer. This story is told by the captain of a ship on which Mr. Müller was traveling.

“I had been on the bridge for 24 hours and never left it, when Müller came to me and said, ‘Captain, I have to be in Quebec on Saturday afternoon.’ ‘It is impossible,’ I said. ‘Then, very well, if your ship cannot take me, God will find some other way. I have never broken an engagement in fifty years; let us go down into the chart room and pray.’

“I looked at the man of God and thought to myself, ‘What lunatic asylum can that man have come from, for I have never heard of such a thing as this?’ ‘Mr Müller,’ I said, ‘do you know how dense the fog is?’”

Tomorrow we will see that Mr. Müller knew the truth of the verse, “He that regardeth the clouds shall not reap” (Ecclesiastes 11:4).

Dear Young Christian:

“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12).

In this verse the word “conversation” doesn’t mean speech. It’s a word that was used when the Bible was translated into English to mean the way you live, or your whole manner of life. So let’s rephrase our verse: Be an example of the believers in the way you livein your whole manner of life. Other people should be able to read your life like a book. And what they should read is: I am a Christianmy life is Christlike.

What has the world read of your life in the past, and what will they read this week? If what they have read in the past hasn’t been a very good story, confess it to the Lord and start a new chapter. We have Christ as the perfect example, let’s follow Him so that our life will be an example as well, and that others may see Christ is us.

Jim Hyland
