Day By DayPart 2

In the young man Joseph we see a firm commitment to trust and obey, and “the Lord was with Joseph, and showed him mercy” (Genesis 39:21). Do you also know how to act and what to say in such dangerous moments of life? Have you ever been in such a situation? How great is the Lord’s mercy. He gives us these stories in the Bible to encourage us to be faithful at all times. We honor Him very much, when we trust Him in faith and resist the temptation. The Lord gives us tools that we can use in the trials of “day by day” living. Here are just three of them:

1. “And the children of Israel that were present at Jerusalem kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with great gladness: and the Levites and the priests praised the Lord day by day, singing with loud instruments unto the Lord” (2 Chronicles 30:21).

Satan always wants to steal our joy in the Lord, and hinder our praises. This verse teaches us the need to live for the Lord seven days of the week, by keeping sinof which leaven is a pictureout of our lives, walking in separation from the world and cultivating the habit of praise and thanksgiving every day.

Day By DayPart 1

“And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by
day, that he hearkened not unto her”
(Genesis 39:10).

In Genesis 39 we find Joseph in very special circumstances. His brothers had sold him as a slave into Egypt, and there he came into the house of Potiphar. We don’t know how long he stayed in the house of this important man, but we know that he was in a responsible position, and Potiphar’s house prospered because of Joseph. But after some time a very dangerous problem started. Potiphar’s wife became a tool in the hand of Satan, to try and cause Joseph to sin. Satan knows human nature very well, and so he used this woman as a tool to tempt him, “day by day.” However Joseph said, “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9). Satan never gives up. If something “day by day” is pressed on us, we become worn down and vulnerable. Amidst all this Joseph was steadfast, and the time came when he “fled, and got him out” (Genesis 39:12).

In our lives the Lord uses these things to test our faith and obedience to Him and His Word.

Dear Young Christian:

Here is a question for you as your start your school or work week: How contented a person are you? Here is what Solomon wrote on the subject: “Better is little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble therewith” (Proverbs 15:16).  This is a simple couplet that makes a lot of sense. Why is the first part so much better than the second? Which would you rather have: peace and a happy heart, or trouble, trouble, trouble? I think we would all pick the first. And we can have it, if we make the Lord our primary object.  The Apostle Paul said, “I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content” (Philippians 4:11).  He also records, “Godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6).  The book of Hebrews tells us why we should be content: “And be content with such things as ye have: for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5).  With Christ’s presence to satisfy our heart and His loving care and protection all along the path, what more could we really want?

Jim Hyland

A Finished Work

At the end of His perfect pathway of faith and service to God His Father, The Lord Jesus could with confidence confirm, “I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do” (John 17:4). Then at the end of the three hours of darkness, after He had made atonement by bearing the punishment of God against sin, and just before He laid down His life, He could affirm, “It is finished” (John 19:30).

What a workcomplete, done, finished and accomplished to the glory and eternal satisfaction of God. Nothing left undone. Not like in the Old Testament where the priests had to offer the same sacrifices over and over again. Now by faith we see Him, seated at the right hand of God as a proof that God is so satisfied that He will never, and could not, require another sacrifice for sin. “And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God” (Hebrews 10:11-12).

Paid in Blood

“Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed
with corruptible things, as silver and gold
but with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18-19).

Hank saw a flashing red light in the rearview mirror, and then a police officer firmly stated the infraction, “You were exceeding the speed limit by 10 miles an hour. This ticket stipulates you pay the fine in money, or in blood, to the Red Cross.”

The offender eventually presented his ticket to the police station. Across it had been written in red ink, “Paid in blood.” The Lord Jesus Christ shed his precious blood in order to pay our debt of sin and redeem us to Himself. Is your debt of sin “paid in blood”? Hank was thankful that his debt was paid by donating blood, but it cost the Lord Jesus His life. We read, “When they came to Jesus, and saw that He was dead already, they brake not His legs: but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced His side, and forthwith came there out blood and water” (John19:33-34). Have you believed it and freely received eternal forgiveness and salvation?

Security

We hear a lot these days about security. Financial security, job security, secure investments and so on. But how wonderful to not only have eternal security because we are saved and on our way to heaven, but to have security and protection all through life as well. We are completely surrounded and encased by our God, and nothing can touch us apart from what He sees is best and for our good and blessing at the time. Here are some verses from the Bible that show how thoroughly secure we are, as encircled on every side by the love, power and preserving presence of the One who is watching over us every moment of very day.

“I will go BEFORE thee” (Isaiah 45:2).

“His banner OVER me was love” (Song of Solomon 2:4).

“He shall COVER thee with His feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust” (Psalm 91:4).

“The eternal God is thy refuge, and UNDERNEATH are the everlasting arms” (Deuteronomy 33:27).

“The Lord shall be thy REREWARD” (Isaiah 58:8).

“The Lord is round about His people from henceforth even for ever” (Psalm 125:2).

Jacob’s Twelve SonsAsher

He was the eighth son of Jacob by Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid and his name means happy.“And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher” (Genesis 30:13).

When Moses blessed the tribes before he died, he said, “Let Asher be blessed with children; let him be acceptable to his brethren, and let him dip his foot in oil. Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be” (Deuteronomy 33:24-25). There is a very real and practical lesson for us to learn from this portion. Children would speak of bearing fruit for God, and being acceptable to our brethren would remind us of the need to go on in fellowship with those who love and seek to please the Lord. The foot dipped in oil would speak of a walk in the power of the Spirit. As a result of such a walk there will be power and endurance in our life and testimony, of which the shoes of iron and brass are a figure.

In Luke 2:36-38, we have a prophetess named Anna, “the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher.” She was a woman of faith and one of the few who was truly waiting for the Messiah.

Communion (reading your Bible and Prayer), and Obedience to the Lord (walking in the truth), along with keeping  Sin out of our lives, will cause spiritual  Growth in our Christian experience.

The following verses really speak for themselves in this regard.

“The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon” (Psalm 92:12).

“Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:1-2).

“Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and for ever. Amen” (2 Peter 3:17-18).

Stress

“The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want”
(Psalm 23:1).

We live in a hurry up, worry up world. Stress is something we are all prone to face, and this Psalm of six verses, 118 words and 28 pronouns is power-packed with truths that can help us face and conquer the stress that surrounds us. What causes you to fret, fuss and fume, toss and turn? What makes you wonder if it’s ever going to work out? What puts a pit in your stomach? Worry is like racing your car engine: it is stewing without doing. Worry is unhealthy, unreasonable and unnecessary! Imagine if you saw me this morning choking myself. Would you think I was crazy? Sure, because I would be! Worry is like choking yourself.

What is God’s answer to our anxiety? God Himself! David, the writer of Psalm 23, had a lot of stress in his life. But he found his stress relief in the Lord, and the Lord’s provision for his daily life and path of faith. We can too! Read this Psalm through, memorize it if you haven’t already, and quote it to yourself whenever you are feeling especially stressed or anxious.

Dear Young Christian:

In the corner of the world where I come fromeastern Ontario, Canadawinter is upon us. Summer and autumn have long passed and now, cold, snowy, icy winter has set in. Everything in this life changes constantly! However, in the midst of all this there are some things that never change.

 The Lord Himself:

“Thou art the same” (Hebrews 1:12).

 The Word of God:

“The Word of our God shall stand forever” (Isaiah 40:8).

 His purposes:

“According to the purpose of Him who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will” (Ephesians 1:11).

So, in a world of continual upheaval there are some things we can count on. Has someone disappointed you or let you down this past weekend? Never mindyou can start the week with confidence in the Lord, His Word, and His ways.

Jim Hyland
