The Cross

His Cross:

“And He bearing His cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha” (John 19:17).

His Death:

“And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:8).

His Blood:

“And, having made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven” (Colossians 1:20).

His Glory:

“God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Galatians 6:14).

I’ll glory only in the cross,

The cross of Calvary;

Where Jesus shed His precious blood,

And died for such as me.

Unknown

“Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the LordWe are confident, I say,
and willing rather to be absent from the body,
and to be present with the Lord”
(2 Corinthians 5:6, 8).

The unbeliever clings to life, fearing the dark unknown, knowing deep down in their very being that they must face God in their sins. How different it is when you know the Lord and His love. Many sick and elderly believers pray daily for the Lord to come, or that He would take them home through death. Death for the Christian holds no fear. In fact he can say, “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory” (1 Corinthians 15:55). There is no “unknown” for the one who “knows” Christ as their Saviour. It is a wonderful future with Him. The Word of God assures us, “and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:17).

Are you saved? Do you know your sins forgiven? Have you received Christ as your Lord and Saviour? If so, you too are ready for heavenready “to be present with the Lord.”

Characteristics of Christ

“The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity”
(Proverbs 1:1-3).

The ceremonial mace is a highly ornamented staff of metal or wood, carried before a sovereign or other high official in civic ceremonies by a mace-bearer, intended to represent the official’s authority. The mace, as used today, derives from the original mace used as a weapon.

When the Scottish Parliament was re-established in 1998 (after being dissolved in 1707), it commissioned the manufacture of a mace as a symbol of its powers. Inscribed into the mace are four words, “Wisdom, Justice, Compassion and Integrity”. These are intended to convey the aspirations of the Scottish Government as to its principles of governing. Whether the characteristics are evident all the time may be questioned by some, but they were all constantly evident characteristics in the life of Christ, and should be evident in the lives of every Christian at all times. How much is it true in our daily life?

Practical Applications
of God’s Word

Part 10Fit For Service

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

Every believer who is seeking to please the Lord wants to be a useful instrument in the service of God. However, to be really serviceable to the Heavenly Master, we must be men and women of the Scriptures. It is the Word of God that equips us to be on the front lines, and to be ready for whatever comes our way. When we have learned the truth of God, and let it have its practical effect, whether for reproof, correction, or instruction in righteousness, and when we are walking in obedience to the truth, then, and only then will be “furnished unto ALL good works.”

There is another criteria for fitness for service as well, and that is to separate from evil and all that defiles. The Word of God tells us that one who does this “shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the Master’s use, and prepared unto EVERY good work” (2 Timothy 2:21).

No Turning BackPart 2

“The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle” (Psalm 78:9).

The Christian is never to turn and flee from the enemy. We are to “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness” (Ephesians 6:14). If you read carefully the description of the “Armour of God” in Ephesians 6:14-18, you will find there is no piece of armour for the back. The Christian life is one of going forward, and meeting the enemy in the power of the Lord and with the resources given to us by Him. The Indian Christian missionary, Sundar Singh, perhaps summed it up best in the hymn that is attributed to his authorship, and which we often sang as young people:

I have decided to follow Jesus;

I have decided to follow Jesus;

I have decided to follow Jesus;

No turning back, no turning back.

The world behind me, the cross before me;

The world behind me, the cross before me;

The world behind me, the cross before me;

No turning back, no turning back.

No Turning BackPart 1

“In their hearts turned back again into Egypt”
(Acts 7:39).

This is a sad, and exceedingly unhappy, state for a child of God to be in. In the Bible Egypt is often a picture or type of the world. A Christian who turns back again into the world, and sets their heart on things here, will suffer a great loss. No, you won’t lose your salvation, thankfully that is safe in the hand of God and the Lord Jesus. Once saved, always saved! The Lord said of His own, “I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand. My Father, which gave them Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father’s hand” (John 10:28-29).

However, you will lose a sense of peace in your heart, a good conscience, and a happy life. Don’t turn back again into “Egypt.” “Know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God” (James 4:4). Therefore, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world” (1 John 2:15).

Dear Young Christian:

Here is a good motto from the Bible for us all to take heed to this week:

“Be courteous” (1 Peter 3:8).

Open the car door for herit’s considerate.

Stand up on a crowded bus and offer the lady your seat.

Let the lady with the young child go ahead and board the plane first.

Say “Excuse me!” when you accidentally bump into that older brother after prayer meeting.

Say “Hello!” to that old, frail sister who doesn’t walk as fast as she used to.

Say “Thank you!” when someone shows you a little kindness.

Hold the swinging door so that it doesn’t slam in the face of the person behind you.

These seem to be little things, but they make the day go better for others. Be courteous. God expects you to.

Your Christian Friend,

Jim Hyland

We would love to hear from you.

Worship

“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power” (Revelation 4:11).

Today we will quote the words of a worship hymn written by Miss F. T. Wigram, sometime before 1871.

Worthy of homage and of praise;

Worthy by all to be adored;

Exhaustless theme of heavenly lays!

Thou, Thou art worthy, Jesus, Lord.

Now seated on Jehovah’s throne,

The Lamb once slain in glory bright:

’Tis thence Thou watchest o’er Thine own,

Guarding us through the deadly fight.

To Thee, e’en now, our song we raise,

Though sure the tribute mean must prove;

No mortal tongue can tell Thy ways,

So full of life and light and love.

Yet, Saviour Thou shalt have full praise:

We soon shall meet Thee on the cloud,

We soon shall see Thee face to face,

In glory praising as we would.

Embedded in the World

Lord Kenneth Clark, internationally known for his television series Civilization, lived and died without faith in Jesus Christ. In His autobiography, he wrote about an overwhelming religious experience he had while visiting a beautiful church.

“My whole being was irradiated (enlightened) by a kind of heavenly joy far more intense than anything I had known before.” Unfortunately “the flood of grace,” as he described it, created a problem for him. If he allowed himself to be influenced by it, he knew he would have to change. His family might think he was crazy, or perhaps the intense joy would prove to be only an illusion. So he concluded, “I was too deeply embedded in the world to change course.”

How tragic! God can enable any of us to change no matter how deeply we may be embedded in the world. He can save us and turn us completely around for eternal blessing. Here’s what Paul said, as to his conversion: “The grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief” (1 Timothy 1:14-15).

Enablement

“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13).

Whatever the Lord bids you do by His Word, the Bible, be assured that He will enable you to do it by His power. He works in us to will and to work His good pleasure. That is, He never directs us in any path of obedience or service without furnishing a sufficient supply of grace and strength. Does He ask you to give up some bad or evil habit? The power to overcome it awaits you. Just claim it! Does He bid you to walk on water? The power by which to walk only waits for you to avail yourself of it. Does He want you to perform some dull duty? There is such transforming power issuing from Him as to make duty a delight, if only you will put His power to work in your daily life.

Whenever you are called upon to stand up and speak a word for your Lord, be sure to seek and obtain the power He gives. That will prove to be your best credential. Take the power of the Lord with you; it is His signet-ring, by which men will be convinced that you have been entrusted with His Word.
