It occupied a highly strategic position on the east side of the Tanitic branch of the Nile, and was built seven years before the very ancient city of Hebron (Num. 13:22). Isaiah mentions the “princes of Zoan” (Isa. 19:11-13; 30:4), and Ezekiel foretells its fate by fire (Ezek. 30:14).
