 He who boasted of having his eyes open saw not what the ass was given to see (2 Peter 2:12-16 by W. Kelly)
 In verse 12, notice, the false prophets are on a level with the “natural brute beasts” (ch. 2:12); in verse 15 Balaam is below them. A dumb ass was able to rebuke him. (2 Peter 2 by F.B. Hole)

The word "stayed" in the RV is hardly better than "forbad," of the KJV, as the rendering of ekōlysen. "Withstood" might represent it better than either.
