A very common expression, “Called saints,” or lit. “Saints by calling.” It is connected with predestination (Rom. 8:30³⁰Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. (Romans 8:30)) and the sovereignty of God; the occasion being when we believed in Christ, and thus truly heard the voice of God. Besides this general calling, God “calls” some specially for particular lines of service. In every case it is purely a question of God’s sovereignty and good pleasure.
