City of Reuben on the east of the Jordan (Jer. 48:23²³And upon Kiriathaim, and upon Beth-gamul, and upon Beth-meon, (Jeremiah 48:23)). Apparently also called BAAL-MEON, BETH-BAAL-MEON, and BEON, (Josh. 13:17¹⁷Heshbon, and all her cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamoth-baal, and Beth-baal-meon, (Joshua 13:17); Num. 32:3,38³Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nimrah, and Heshbon, and Elealeh, and Shebam, and Nebo, and Beon, (Numbers 32:3)
³⁸And Nebo, and Baal-meon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names unto the cities which they builded. (Numbers 32:38)) (which says “their names being changed”); 1 Chronicles 5:8⁸And Bela the son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel, who dwelt in Aroer, even unto Nebo and Baal-meon: (1 Chronicles 5:8) and Ezekiel 25:9⁹Therefore, behold, I will open the side of Moab from the cities, from his cities which are on his frontiers, the glory of the country, Beth-jeshimoth, Baal-meon, and Kiriathaim, (Ezekiel 25:9) speak of it as a city that was “the glory of the country.” Identified with the ruins at Tell Maain, 31° 41’ N, 35° 44’ E.
