The word χολή, “gall,” occurs in Matthew 27:34³⁴They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. (Matthew 27:34); and the word for “bitterness,” πικρία, in Romans 3:14¹⁴Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: (Romans 3:14); Ephesians 4:31³¹Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: (Ephesians 4:31) and Hebrews 12:15¹⁵Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; (Hebrews 12:15). The translation in Acts 8:23²³For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity. (Acts 8:23) is literal, except that it should be “a gall of bitterness.”‘ Peter saw that Simon was still in the state of nature which is only bitterness.
