Besides the ordinary use of the word in its literal sense, it is applied to cousins and nephews (Gen. 14:14¹⁴And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan. (Genesis 14:14); Lev. 10:4⁴And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them, Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp. (Leviticus 10:4)); and to kinsmen generally (Ex. 2:11¹¹And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. (Exodus 2:11); 2 Kings 10:13¹³Jehu met with the brethren of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, Who are ye? And they answered, We are the brethren of Ahaziah; and we go down to salute the children of the king and the children of the queen. (2 Kings 10:13); 2 Chron. 22:8⁸And it came to pass, that, when Jehu was executing judgment upon the house of Ahab, and found the princes of Judah, and the sons of the brethren of Ahaziah, that ministered to Ahaziah, he slew them. (2 Chronicles 22:8)). Also employed where there is a moral likeness (Job 30:29²⁹I am a brother to dragons, and a companion to owls. (Job 30:29); Prov. 18:9⁹He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster. (Proverbs 18:9)). See BRETHREN.
