These were mostly divans, low raised seats round the room. They served for reclining on in the day and for sleeping on at night, which accounts for their being often called “beds.” Some, with light frames, were movable, on which a corpse could be carried for burial (Job 7:13¹³When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaint; (Job 7:13); Amos 6:4⁴That lie upon beds of ivory, and stretch themselves upon their couches, and eat the lambs out of the flock, and the calves out of the midst of the stall; (Amos 6:4); Luke 5:19,24¹⁹And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. (Luke 5:19)
²⁴But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. (Luke 5:24)).
