Only named in scripture as an unclean bird not to be eaten. Some have supposed that a marine bird is alluded to: the RV has “seamew.” There are however cuckoos in the land, and called also by that name, because of their cry (Lev. 11:1616And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind, (Leviticus 11:16); Deut. 14:1515And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind, (Deuteronomy 14:15)).
