My days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good. They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.1 – Thou carriest them away as with a flood; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up. In the morning it flourisheth, and groweth up; in the evening it is cut down, and withereth.2 – Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down.3

The world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.4 – They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.5 – Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.6

My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.1 – And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.2

The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.3 – Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.4 – I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.5

Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth.1 – The letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.2

Christ … loved the church, and gave himself for it; that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, that he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing.3

Forasmuch … as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same.1

A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.1 – We have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities.2 – It became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.3 – Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered.4
