four.Four kingdoms, (ver. 17,) called beasts, from their tyranny and oppression, emerging from the wars and commotions of the world.
Dan. 2:32‑33,37‑40• 32This image's head was of fine gold, its breast and its arms of silver, its belly and its thighs of brass,
33its legs of iron, its feet part of iron and part of clay.
37Thou, O king, art a king of kings, unto whom the God of the heavens hath given the kingdom, the power, and the strength, and the glory;
38and wheresoever the children of men, the beasts of the field, and the fowl of the heavens dwell, he hath given them into thy hand, and hath made thee ruler over them all: thou art this head of gold.
39And after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior to thee; then another third kingdom of brass, which shall bear rule over all the earth.
40And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth everything, and as iron that breaketh all these, so shall it break in pieces and bruise.

;
Zech. 6:1‑8• 1And I lifted up mine eyes again, and saw, and behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass.
2In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses;
3and in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled, strong horses.
4And I spoke and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord?
5And the angel answered and said unto me, These are the four spirits of the heavens, which go forth from standing before the Lord of all the earth.
6That in which are the black horses goeth forth into the north country; and the white go forth after them; and the grisled go forth towards the south country;
7and the strong go forth, and seek to go that they may walk to and fro through the earth. And he said, Go, walk to and fro through the earth. And they walked to and fro through the earth.
8And he cried unto me, and spoke unto me, saying, See, these that go forth towards the north country have quieted my spirit in the north country.
(Zech. 6:1‑8)
beasts.
Dan. 7:4‑8,17• 4The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till its wings were plucked; and it was lifted up from the earth, and made to stand upon two feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it.
5And behold, another beast, a second, like unto a bear, and it raised up itself on one side; and it had three ribs in its mouth between its teeth; and they said thus unto it: Arise, devour much flesh.
6After this I saw, and behold, another, like a leopard, and it had four wings of a bird upon its back; and the beast had four heads; and dominion was given to it.
7After this I saw in the night visions, and behold, a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and exceeding strong; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the rest with its feet; and it was different from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns.
8I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another, a little horn, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots; and behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.
17These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, that shall arise out of the earth.

Psa. 76:4• 4More glorious art thou, more excellent, than the mountains of prey. (Psa. 76:4)
;
Ezek. 19:3‑8• 3And she brought up one of her whelps; it became a young lion, and he learned to catch the prey; he devoured men.
4And the nations heard of him; he was taken in their pit, and they brought him with nose-rings into the land of Egypt.
5And when she saw that she had waited and her hope was lost, she took another of her whelps, and made him a young lion.
6And he went up and down among the lions; he became a young lion, and learned to catch the prey; he devoured men.
7And he knew their desolate palaces, and he laid waste their cities, so that the land was desolate, and all it contained, by the noise of his roaring.
8Then the nations set against him on every side from the provinces, and spread their net over him; he was taken in their pit.

Rev. 13:1• 1And I stood upon the sand of the sea; and I saw a beast rising out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and upon its horns ten diadems, and upon its heads names of blasphemy. (Rev. 13:1)
 It is not, however, to be supposed that their rise was simultaneous, for if it is that they represent, as scarcely any one doubts, the same four empires as Nebuchadnezzar’s image typifies, they appear successively on the scene; and, indeed, this is indicated by Daniel in verse 6 (when he says, “After this I beheld, and lo another”) and also in verse 1. (Daniel 7 by E. Dennett)
 Here all alike, while differing in their character, and perhaps in degrees of excellency, are seen as beasts to show their moral features, for God being shut out, self, selfish appetites, earthly aims and earthly motives and objects, cruelty and rapacity, characterize all these, Gentile kingdoms. (Daniel 7 by E. Dennett)
