1. The general appointment for sinful man—the death of the body by the separation of the soul from it (Heb. 9:27²⁷And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: (Hebrews 9:27); Rom. 5:14¹⁴Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. (Romans 5:14); Rom. 6:23²³For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)).

2. The spiritual condition of fallen man, “dead in trespasses and sins” (Eph. 2:1,5¹And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; (Ephesians 2:1)
⁵Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) (Ephesians 2:5); Rom. 7:24²⁴O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? (Romans 7:24)).

3. Death personified as a power of Satan: the last enemy to be destroyed (1 Cor. 15:26²⁶The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. (1 Corinthians 15:26); Rev. 20:13-14¹³And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. ¹⁴And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. (Revelation 20:13‑14)).

4. THE SECOND DEATH: eternal punishment (Rev. 2:11¹¹He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death. (Revelation 2:11); Rev. 20:14¹⁴And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. (Revelation 20:14); Rev. 21:8⁸But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. (Revelation 21:8)).
